Lewisham: Statistic Dots and Real Peoples Names

Platform-7

In creating the artist location page this morning for Silent Cacophony I was struck by how easy it is to look at an image aesthetically while losing sight of what a pretty map of red dots actually represents. 'Bomb Sight' is a superb website mapping the locations of bombs during the London Blitz. Below is the sober list of people who died just in the New Cross Woolworths V-2 explosion alone, from Lewisham Council's local history and achieve centre. If a list of all those who perished under these red dots was compiled it would run for pages and pages, and if those who were maimed both physically and/or mentally (and generally forgotten) were included it would probably take a day or more to read. A day to read but each line with a person's name takes a lifetime for those affected to forget.

It is worth noting the footnote below "And 24 others who could not be identified" -

Caffy St Luce (Rocklands) will be releasing paper petals of 168 sunflowers over New Cross Road from above the site of the old Woolworths (now Iceland Supermarket) on Monday morning, 11th November 2013, to honour those who were killed, in memory of the 121 seriously injured and the terrible trauma caused across the local area.
