The Day We Saw Silence
Have you ever seen it walk
across a roundabout, in the morning traffic
about the same pace as you,
or I, or any man,
with one foot always
ploughing the air?
Or perhaps you’ve seen it linger
in the hallways or the dressing rooms
of those very first notes of a song,
unattended,
or seen it cut, in passing, the white cliffs in half,
leaving one side luminous, one dark
in harmonious melancholy –
or perhaps, like I, you have longed to see it
printed on the cover of the morning papers
for once.
And as the traffic lights
conduct this concert,
our hurried feet applaud, and yet in the middle
of the lonely music, the past has dressed
this bunker-bleak auditorium
softly green and red.
And sitting in some dimly-lit room
years from now,
I will write to you and reminiscence
the day we saw silence.
