Observing the Witness by xname Remembering those who died under the bombs, but also those who witnessed it, this solo performance symbolically re-enacts some of the indelible events that have happened in Poplar, at the extreme margins of the East End, a recurring target of aerial attacks over two World Wars. In the society of interaction and entertainment, where observation becomes passive and not contemplative, impersonating the role of the witness means operating a transfer: the audience, composed of random passengers, by observing a 'mask' projected towards a past event, subliminally experiences the drama of history, yet purged of its violence and ritualised in the present.
